MARION, N.C.— Montreat College's baseball team concluded its Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) regular season on Friday with a solo contest against the Bryan College Lions at Big League Camp in Marion, N.C. The game was also recognized as senior day for the squad, and 10 seniors were honored for their time at Montreat. In the game, the Cavs lost by a score of 10-1.
In the third inning,
Richard Matos Delacruz singled to short when he beat out a throw for Montreat's initial knock of the day. Meanwhile, the Lions had 10 hits in the game and scored a run in each of the first three innings. Bryan (26-20, 18-12 AAC) then scored six runs across the fifth and sixth frames to take a 9-0 lead going into the bottom of the sixth.
That's when
Jaider Morelos smashed a senior day solo home run. He sent a pitch over the barrier in right field for his eighth bomb of the season.
The Cavaliers (20-30, 11-19 AAC) used five arms in the senior day event.
Trevor Laughlin started the contest and pitched for four full frames. He allowed four hits and three runs with two of them earned. He struck out a Lion in his shift. In the fifth, the Cavaliers used two pitchers to get out of the inning.
Donovan Parker lasted 1/3 frames, surrendering a hit and two runs. He walked two batters and struck out one. He also hit a batter on the mound.
Hunter Rast lasted 1 1/3 innings. He allowed four runs on two hits. He struck out two batters and walked four.
Senior
Braden Holliday also took the mound in the AAC contest. He threw for 1 1/3 innings as well and allowed a hit and two walks. He struck out a Lion in his performance.
Dawson Yokley threw the final two frames and gave up two hits and an earned run. He walked three batters with no strikeouts.
Together, the Cavs went 2-for-28 on senior day. The Cavaliers walked three times while striking out five. Four Montreat players were stranded on the basepaths.
"Today, it was sad to see our last regular season game for our seniors," said head coach
Jason Beck. "Those guys have given a tremendous amount to this program, and we cannot thank them enough. Their leadership cannot be replaced, but we are excited to see where they are headed in their futures."
The Cavs' postseason fate is yet to be determined. The AAC Tournament will begin on Tuesday in Kingsport, Tenn., and the Cavaliers hope to be included in the field as the No. 10 seed.
