YOUNG HARRIS, Ga.— The Montreat men's lacrosse team finished up its 2025 regular season campaign Friday night with a road matchup against the Young Harris College Mountain Lions. Battling the NCAA Division II program, the Cavaliers ultimately suffered a 21-8 defeat to end their season with a 0-14 record.
Three of the four quarters favored the home side. Young Harris (6-8) outscored the visitors in the first, third and fourth frames. In the opening period, the Mountain Lions collected five of the scores. The Cavs bagged the initial goal when
Landon LaGro set up
Gavin Mottram for his 11
th strike of the year; however, YHC registered five consecutive goals to wrap up a 5-1 first quarter.
Montreat maintained the upper hand in the second frame, cutting the gap to just two goals by halftime.
Garrett Thomson, LaGro and
Eli King deposited shots into the back of the net, while
D'Andrae McKenzie snagged an assist on Thomson's tally. Entering the intermission, the visitors only trailed 6-4.
Yasiel Sihombing kept the Cavaliers' momentum going by scoring right out of the gate to start the third period. Unfortunately for Montreat, that 6-5 deficit was as close as it got to flipping the scoreline in its favor. Young Harris never fully relinquished the lead after seizing it midway through the first quarter. Seven straight goals kept the Mountain Lions in charge. McKenzie scored twice late in the frame, but the hosts still owned a 13-7 lead with 15 minutes to go.
YHC capped off its senior night with an eight-goal fourth. Lagro picked up his second strike of the contest during the last quarter, but the Mountain Lions expanded their advantage right up to the final whistle. At the end of 60 minutes, Young Harris captured a 21-8 win.
The hosts claimed victory thanks to edges in shots (54-28), shots on goal (33-18) and faceoffs (21-9). YHC also committed fewer turnovers (24-18) and scooped up two additional ground balls (28-26).
Defensively,
Jay Chance stopped 12 attempts on target across his 60 minutes in net. The Waxhaw, N.C. native also caused three turnovers to lead the squad.
Dre Lavjonne paced the team with five ground balls, and
Carlos Montoya won six faceoffs. Offensively, both McKenzie and LaGro turned in performances of two goals and one assist.
With the regular season officially over, the Montreat men's lacrosse team begins its preparations for the 2026 campaign.
