BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C.— The Montreat women's tennis team hosted the seventh-ranked Tennessee Wesleyan University Bulldogs Tuesday afternoon in the squad's Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) and regular season finale. Facing off against one of the NAIA's best, the Cavaliers suffered a 7-0 defeat. With the loss, Montreat moved to 3-13 (3-6 AAC) this year.
Tennessee Wesleyan (11-3, 8-0 AAC) secured the doubles point in quick fashion. The Bulldogs' nationally-ranked doubles pairing (No. 32) took the win on the top court, 6-3. Meanwhile, TWU utilized a 6-2 win at No. 2 and a Montreat forfeit on the third court to sweep all three doubles matches.
Chiharu Ito was the lone Cav to go the distance in singles action, doing so against the 52
nd-ranked singles player. On the second court, Ito captured the initial set, 6-4, before falling 7-5 and 6-2 across the final two frames.
Ainhoa Ordonez put up a valiant effort on the top court. The Barcelona, Spain native went to a tiebreak in set one. Ordonez ultimately came up just a hair short, 7-6. She then dropped the second frame, 6-2.
Clara Roman won seven games at No. 3 despite losing both sets.
Annika Rojas picked up wins in four games on the fourth court. The Cavaliers forfeited the final two singles bouts, allowing the Bulldogs to finish up their 7-0 victory.
Montreat now turns its attention to the AAC Tournament, which is scheduled to begin on April 10 in Chattanooga, Tenn. The Cavs' first round opponent and start time is yet to be determined.
