Cavs defeated by ranked Bulldogs

BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C.— Montreat's men's tennis team hosted the No. 2 Tennessee Wesleyan University Bulldogs in an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) team match Tuesday afternoon. The Bulldogs swept the Cavaliers and triumphed in the match by a score of 7-0.
 
The Bulldogs (11-2, 8-0 AAC) seized the doubles point by winning all three matches. Every match finished with scores of 6-1. Ben Smith and Bruno-Casimir Gehlhaar played the No. 9-ranked doubles pairing in the country from the last ITA poll. Danel Diez and Youssef Idboufous played the 36th-best doubles pairing in their defeat. Jorge Cebria and Ibai Lopez played together in their 6-1 loss.
 
In singles play, Montreat (3-13, 3-5 AAC) could not steal any of the six matches. Cebria was able to win three games but lost his bout, 6-1 and 6-2. At No. 1, Diez's match resulted in a 6-1, 6-4 loss. After losing the first set, 7-6, Gehlhaar was able to steal the second set, 6-4. In the tiebreak, Gehlhaar lost, 10-7.
 
Idboufous was also able to take one set in his match. He won set one, 7-5, and then lost the second, 6-3. In the end, Idboufous lost the third by a score of 7-5. Lopez was only able to win one game against the NAIA's No. 4-ranked singles player. His match ended 6-0 and 6-1. Smith was swept 6-0 in both of his sets.
 
Individually, Idboufous won the most games with 16. Behind him, Gehlhaar finished with 13 victories. Diez had six, while Cebria had four. Lopez finished with just two, and Smith had one.
 
Up next, the Cavaliers prepare for the AAC Tournament held in Chattanooga, Tenn. on April 10.
