Men’s tennis dropped by No. 21 Union Commonwealth

BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C.— The Montreat men's tennis squad played its second Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) team match in as many days on Saturday when it hosted the 21st-ranked Union Commonwealth University Bulldogs. Playing at Charles D. Owen High School in Black Mountain, N.C., the visiting Bulldogs pieced together a 7-0 victory, dropping the Cavaliers to 1-9 (1-3 AAC) in the process.

Union Commonwealth (6-4, 3-0 AAC) began the day with a 1-0 advantage thanks to the doubles point. The Bulldogs claimed the top two pairings via 6-2 and 6-0 finals. The 6-0 sweep came courtesy of the NAIA's No. 14-ranked tandem. Meanwhile, Ibai Lopez and Youssef Idboufous were on the brink of winning at No. 3, but their match was halted at 5-2 when UCU sealed the fate of the doubles point.

The Bulldogs also walked away with a clean sweep in singles action. Union claimed the initial four clashes in straight sets, and it was up on the fifth and sixth courts when Lopez and Cebria were forced to retire. Lopez came up just short in his opening frame, 7-5, before ceding way in the second, while Cebria retired during the first set.

Daniel Garcia Estrabot won six games across his two frames played at No. 2. Bruno-Casimir Gehlhaar, Idboufous and Danel Diez each won four games, with Diez doing so against the NAIA's 15th-ranked singles player.

Montreat takes some time off for spring break before returning to action on March 18 with a conference clash at Columbia College in Columbia, S.C.
