Montreat falls to Warriors in AAC clash

BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C.— The Montreat College men's lacrosse team continued its Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) game from Friday night against the No. 2 Webber International University Warriors Saturday morning. Friday's contest was delayed due to air quality. Wildfires in the area compromised the air in Black Mountain, N.C. On Saturday, the three remaining quarters were played without any issues, and the Warriors won the contest, 26-3.

After starting the match in the second quarter with the visitors already out to a 6-0 lead, WIU (11-0, 5-0 AAC) scored six more goals while Montreat netted just one. The Cavalier effort came from Garrett Thomson, his third goal of the season. The goal was assisted by Gavin Mottram. At halftime, Montreat trailed, 12-1.

Montreat (0-10, 0-5 AAC) scored two goals in the third quarter. D'Andrae McKenzie scored on a pass from Eli King. King then scored a goal of his own at the buzzer to notch his eighth of the year. The Warriors added to their lead by scoring four goals.

The Cavs did not score in the concluding period. The visitors stepped on the gas at the end and tallied 10 goals in the fourth quarter alone. The Cavaliers had five shots on target in the frame. At the end of the 45 minutes played Saturday morning, Montreat fell, 26-3.

Individually, the three goals were scored by different Cavaliers. Thomson, McKenzie and King all found the net in the contest. King and Mottram were the only Montreat players to register an assist. Goalie Jay Chance made 13 saves in the game. Ty Goodson led the Cavs with two caused turnovers. Carlos Montoya had a team-high six ground balls. Five other Cavs secured three ground balls.

Altogether, the Cavaliers had 22 shots with 12 of them on goal. Montreat turned possession over 25 times while the Warriors did so 14 times. Webber went 18-for-19 on clears. Montreat converted all its attempts in the rest of the contest to go 21-for-22. The visitors picked up 50 ground balls to Montreat's 31. The Warriors also won 19 faceoffs while Montreat won 10. Neither team could convert on any of the nine extra-man opportunities in the game.

In Montreat's next game, it will host the Point University Skyhawks on Tuesday. The opening faceoff is slated for 3 p.m.
