MILLIGAN, Tenn.— Winners of back-to-back Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) matches, the Montreat women's tennis team continued league play on Monday when it took on the Milligan University Buffaloes in Tennessee. Despite their run of good form, the Cavaliers couldn't overcome the hosts, dropping a 6-1 final score to fall to 3-11 (3-5 AAC) on the year.
Milligan (6-8, 4-3 AAC) seized a 1-0 lead when it won the doubles point.
Clara Roman and
Annika Rojas captured a 6-3 win on the second court, but a 6-3 victory at No. 1 and a Montreat forfeit at No. 3 ensured that the Buffaloes started the matchup with the edge.
Named AAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week earlier today,
Chiharu Ito kept up her dominant streak with a triumph in the top singles clash. Ito claimed the battle, 6-3, 6-4.
The Buffs proved to be victorious in the other five singles matches, sealing their 6-1 win.
Ainhoa Ordonez won three games in each of her two sets played at No. 2, while both Rojas and
Ali Zakariasen notched four games at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively. Roman won a single game on the second court, and the Cavs forfeited the sixth and final spot in the singles lineup.
Montreat hosts North Carolina A&T State University, an NCAA Division I program, for its next competition on Wednesday. Doubles play is slated to begin at 1 p.m. in Montreat, N.C.
