MILLIGAN, Tenn.— Montreat's men's tennis team traveled to face the Milligan University Buffaloes in an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) team match Monday afternoon. The conference rival bested the Cavaliers as they lost the match by a score of 6-1. With the defeat, Montreat's record fell to 3-10 (3-4 AAC).
Milligan (7-7, 3-3 AAC) immediately jumped out and won the doubles point, courtesy of three wins in the pairings.
Youssef Idboufous and
Ibai Lopez faltered in their match, 6-3. The other two matches ended 6-4.
Jorge Cebria and
Daniel Garcia Estrabot were paired up in their clash, and
Danel Diez and
Bruno-Casimir Gehlhaar dropped the other battle.
In singles play, the lone Cav to snag a win was Cebria. His three-set match went the full distance and then some as he triumphed in set one, 6-2, lost the second set, 6-4, but then brought the match home with a 12-10 scoreline in the final tiebreak.
All of the other singles bouts concluded in straight sets. Garcia Estrabot lost a high-scoring affair. He dropped the first set, 6-4. After set two was knotted at 6-6, a tiebreak was needed to separate the two players. Garcia Estrabot lost the tiebreak, 7-5. Lopez lost his match, 6-3 and 6-4. A similar result for Idboufous finished 6-1 and 6-2. Diez scored three in set one but was shut out of set two in a 6-3, 6-0 loss. Gehlhaar fell in both of his sets, 6-1.
Cebria led the way with 15 games won on the day. Garcia Estrabot and Lopez followed with 14 and 10 wins, respectively. Diez finished with seven, and both Gehlhaar and Idboufous tied with six wins.
The next action for the men's squad will be on Wednesday when the Cavs host the North Carolina A&T State University Aggies. First serves are scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
