MONTREAT, N.C.— The Montreat men's tennis team began a three-match homestand Wednesday afternoon when it welcomed NCAA Division I foe North Carolina A&T State University to campus. In the showdown between the Cavaliers and the Aggies, the visitors claimed all seven team points to win the dual match, 7-0. With the defeat, the Cavs moved to 3-11 on the year.
N.C. A&T (12-2) took two of the three doubles bouts to open the day with a 1-0 advantage. The Aggies won 6-0 in the top clash and 6-4 on the second court.
Jorge Cebria and
Ibai Lopez fended off the sweep by seizing the No. 3 doubles battle, 6-4.
The visiting side won all six singles matches, but a pair of Cavaliers forced the extra third set. Playing at No. 2, Lopez responded from a tight 7-6 defeat in the opening frame to win the second set, 6-3. A competitive third frame ultimately fell the way of the Aggies, 6-4.
Daniel Garcia Estrabot also went the distance in his match on the fifth court. The Almeria, Spain native proved to be victorious in the initial set, 6-4, before falling in the final two frames.
Cebria won five games across two sets at No. 3, while
Youssef Idboufous captured two games in each of his two frames played on the top court.
Bruno-Casimir Gehlhaar and
Danel Diez each triumphed in a total of two games.
Montreat is back in action on Saturday against Methodist University, an NCAA Division III program. Doubles play is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. at Charles D. Owen High School in Black Mountain, N.C.
