MONTREAT, N.C.— The Montreat women's tennis team played host to the Brenau University Golden Tigers Friday afternoon in Montreat, N.C. Battling the visitors in Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) action, the Cavaliers came away with a 5-2 victory, improving to 2-10 (2-4 AAC) in the process.
Seizing the momentum early, Montreat registered wins on all three doubles courts.
Ainhoa Ordonez and
Chiharu Ito bagged a 6-1 triumph at No. 1, while
Clara Roman and
Annika Rojas seized a 6-3 victory.
Ali Zakariasen and
Kate Hutson also contributed to the success with a forfeit win in the final doubles pairing.
Brenau (3-7, 0-5 AAC) captured singles victories at No. 2 and No. 5 for its two team points; however, the Cavs owned the upper hand in the other four matchups. Ito bounced back on the top court after falling 6-4 in the opening frame. The Shizuoka, Japan native earned the 6-1 advantage in set two before claiming the final frame tiebreak, 10-8.
Rojas and Roman made quick work of their foes on the third and fourth courts, respectively. Rojas topped her opposition in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. Roman did the same, dropping just two games in the first frame. Zakariasen put the cherry on top of the hosts' win with a forfeit triumph at No. 6.
Montreat continues AAC play tomorrow when it heads to Cleveland, Ga. for a team match against the Truett McConnell University Bears. Doubles action is slated to start at 1 p.m.
