MELBOURNE, Fla.— The Montreat softball team was back in action with a doubleheader on Wednesday after a pair of wins on Tuesday. The Cavaliers repeated the results with wins against the Lourdes University Grey Wolves and the Aquinas College Saints. Montreat took the matchups with scores of 7-1 and 5-4, respectively.
Both teams were held scoreless through four frames of game one. The Cavaliers left the bases loaded in the top of the fourth inning, but Montreat was still the first to score after a three-run bomb from
Amayia Hernandez. The deep shot to left scored
Abigail Wyatt and
Isabella Martinez. The Cavs led the Grey Wolves (0-5) after five innings by a score of 3-0.
The Cavaliers scored all their runs in the final three frames. In the sixth,
Nevaeh Rivera singled to center field, allowing
Makenzie Ritchie to score. Still in the top of the sixth, Wyatt singled up the middle, and Rivera made it home on the play.
Lourdes denied the shutout, plating a run after a wild pitch in the sixth. Montreat got the run back and more, however, after
Maggie Knight doubled to right center in the seventh. The hit scored
Haley Fethke. The last run of the game came from an
Alanna Hernandez double to left center that scored
Elizabeth Gergen.
Carter Thornton got the start and the win in the contest. She threw for five complete innings, allowing just two hits. Thornton tallied four strikeouts in her shift.
Jaidyn Stephens and
Mykenzie Flores finished the game for Montreat with each pitching an inning. Together, they gave up three hits and a run. Flores had a strikeout during her inning in the circle.
The follow-up game also started with Montreat runs. In the bottom of the first, Wyatt doubled to left center, ushering in
Makayla Reid to score. Still in the first, Wyatt was brought home after a Fethke single through the left side. The Cavs jumped out to a quick 2-0 advantage.
In the following three innings, the Saints (9-9) put four across to crawl their way back, taking a 4-2 lead through four innings of play.
Rebecca Carson started the second game. She allowed 10 hits and four earned runs. She couldn't strike out any Saints in her innings of work.
Victoria Alcantar came in to pitch the final three innings. She notched the lone backward K for the Cavs in the game.
Montreat mounted a comeback in the bottom of the fifth. They scored three runs thanks to a two-run single from
Amayia Hernandez and a sacrifice fly from Fethke. The Cavs retook the lead, 5-4, with two innings to play.
With the Cavs still ahead 5-4, the Montreat defense sealed the game. In the seventh frame with two runners in scoring position and no outs, the Saints popped out and lined into a double play to end the contest. The defensive effort aided in the Cavalier win as they were outhit 16-4 in the game. With the triumphs, Montreat stayed undefeated in Melbourne.
Individually for the Cavs, Fethke and Wyatt each had three hits, the most by any Montreat player.
Amayia Hernandez had two, along with
Dayton Kell and Knight. Four other Cavaliers registered a hit in the twin bill.
Amayia Hernandez also led Montreat with five RBIs in the doubleheader.
Altogether, Montreat went 16-for-49 in both games combined. Eight doubles and a home run added up to nine extra-base knocks. The victors walked a total of seven times, five of which came in the second game.
The Cavs will play two more games in Florida, both on Friday. Montreat will face the Indiana Institute of Technology Warriors and the University of Northwestern Ohio Racers. The games will start at 10 a.m. and 12:15 p.m., respectively.
