MOBILE, Ala.— Montreat's baseball team concluded its road trip to Alabama Saturday afternoon. The matinee showing saw the Cavs beat the Rams in game one, 10-8, and the Rams returned the favor in game two by a score of 10-9.
The Cavs started hot early with the first blast of the year to left center.
Tommy Ramos homered in the top of the first, bringing two other Cavaliers around the diamond with him. Later in the inning,
Blake Watts singled to third base, allowing
Jason Brulport to score on the play. After one frame, Montreat led 4-0.
That's when the Rams fought back. They went on to score six during the following two frames to take a 6-4 lead after three innings.
Dawson Yokley got the nod in game one. He clocked in for 1 2/3 innings of work, allowing two hits, four runs and three walks while striking out three Rams in the process.
Some well-timed hitting along with quality at-bats allowed multiple runs to come through in the fifth inning. A
Blake Watts double to left center scored
Logan Strickland. With the very next batter,
Dawson Bryant singled to center. The knock plated both
Justin Austin and Watts. The runs put the Cavs ahead by two (8-6), a deficit the Rams could not overcome.
The Rams only mustered two runs past the fourth frame of a seven-inning ballgame. The lockdown was thanks to
Emilio Trevino, who got his first win in the initial game pitching for two innings. He gave up three hits, one run and a walk while collecting three Ks. Montreat went along to win 10-8.
Game two saw seven lead changes in a seven-inning contest. The back-and-forth affair was highlighted by a
Dean Davis big shot to left, scoring three runs in fourth to take a 5-3 lead over the Rams. After the hosts edged back in front, Ramos smacked his second big fly of the day with a two-run bomb to left field.
Ryan Henrickson went most of the way, notching four innings on the bump, surrendering six hits and six runs. The lefty struck five Rams out. The rest of the bullpen behind him consisted of three other Cav pitchers. Struggling slightly, their combined five hits and four runs allowed ultimately gave the Rams the win. Together they struck out two batters and gave up two walks.
Montreat got two runs back in the seventh thanks to a
Jaider Morelos double to right center and
Daniel Wagner trotting home from a wild pitch. The efforts were not enough as the Rams won 10-9 in the oscillating game.
"Today, we made some great improvements going into opening conference weekend," said head coach
Jason Beck. "We really fought and started to create an identity, but we need to learn to finish. I'm confident we will continue to improve, and the results will be there."
The Cavaliers will travel to Bob Jones University to face the Bruins in a single game on Tuesday, Feb. 11 in Greenville, S.C. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
