Cavs complete series in Laurinburg

LAURINBURG, N.C.—Montreat's baseball team concluded their series against the St. Andrews University Knights on Sunday. Game two was suspended on Saturday and completed on Sunday before the start of a full nine inning contest.

Montreat led 6-1 through five innings at the time of the suspension. In the remainder of the matchup, the Cavs added to their advantage with a trio of runs. A Richard Matos Delacruz sacrifice fly and a wild pitch drove in the first insurance runs in the sixth, while a bases loaded hit-by-pitch plated a Cavalier in the seventh. On the mound, Ryan Henrickson slammed the door on the Knights with two no-hit frames, and the Cavs triumphed over SAU, 9-1.

Henrickson continued his dominance into game three registering three strikeouts while giving up two hits and two walks in his three innings of work.

To start the fourth, Manny Moore singled early in the frame for Montreat. Then with one out secured, St. Andrews' starting pitcher walked three Cavs in a row, scoring Moore. With the bases juiced and still just one out, the Cavaliers struck out twice to end the inning. The Knights had an answer for the run they gave up in the bottom half as a bases clearing double brought SAU in front 3-1 after four.

Montreat also tallied three runs of its own in the very next inning. Back-to-back doubles from Zeb Marquis and Jaider Morelos scored one to start the frame. After another Moore single, Morelos advanced to third, and with the very next batter in Tommy Ramos, a deep sacrifice fly allowed both runners to advance, scoring Morelos. Hunter Furches gathered a base knock to advance Moore, and another sac fly, this time from Jason Brulport, helped the Cavs retake the lead after five innings gone.

In the sixth, the Cavs extended their lead when Marquis singled. Marquis stole second base and advanced all the way around the bases to score due to Knight errors. In the bottom of the frame however, St. Andrews again scored three to take the lead 6-5. The Knights tacked on an additional run in the seventh to close out the game.

In the final three innings, the Cavs totaled just one hit from Ramos and left three runners stranded. Overall, Montreat went 8-for-31 with four errors. Both Marquis and Moore swung for two hits while Brulport walked twice.

Up next on the calendar for Montreat, the Cavs will travel to Alabama to play a pair of double headers against the University of Mobile on Feb. 7-8. Friday's contests are scheduled for 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. while Saturday's are slated for 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.
