Women’s lacrosse falls in home opener

BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C.— Montreat's women's lacrosse team hosted the Warner University Royals in its home opener at Pulliam Stadium on Friday. The Cavaliers lost by a score of 27-2. With the loss, Montreat moved to a 0-4 record.
 
Marley Smith scored her sixth goal of the year to tie both teams at one with 11 minutes to play in the initial quarter. From there, the Royals (3-2) scored nine more goals in the frame to lead the Cavs 10-1.
 
In the second quarter, the Royals kept Montreat silent and scored eight themselves. At the half, the Cavs trailed 18-1. The Cavaliers had four shots on goal in the half to Warner's 25. Although Montreat turned over the ball 10 times, they forced six out of the Royals by halftime.
 
After the intermission, Grace Wiegand scored her eighth goal of the campaign approaching the end of the third period. However, the Royals capitalized and continued to put the ball in the back of the net. At the end of the third frame, the Cavs trailed 23-2.
 
The visitors slowed their productivity in the fourth quarter, working the ball around to find more open looks. They scored four goals in the frame and return to Florida after beating Montreat, 27-2.
 
Individually, Smith was the only Cav with a free-position attempt. Although she could not convert, she led the Cavaliers with four shots, all on target. Wiegand was the only other Montreat player to record a shot. Her three shots were all on target in her performance as well. Tayah Quinn made a career-high 15 saves in the game.
 
Montreat did not receive a card during the entire match while Warner was shown five green cards and three yellow cards. Regarding clears, the Cavs converted seven of them on 17 attempts. They also secured nine ground balls in the contest. The Cavs did not assist on either of their two goals, while Warner tallied eight assists.
 
Up next, the Cavs will play the Lees-McRae College Bobcats in Banner Elk, N.C. The opening draw control is scheduled for 6 p.m.
