SHAWNEE, Okla.— Montreat's softball team completed its trip to Oklahoma with one game on Sunday against the (RV) Mid-America Christian University Evangels. The game marked the first matchup between the two schools, and MACU won 4-2.
Montreat (8-6) started the game with a run in the bottom of the first.
Maggie Knight singled to center field with two outs. The base knock allowed
Amayia Hernandez to sprint home from second base. The Cavalier lead didn't last long as in the top of the next inning, MACU (2-6) loaded the bases with two singles and a hit-by-pitch. With the next batter, one swing scored four runs on a grand slam. The Cavs trailed 4-1 going into the bottom of the second, looking to come back.
Victoria Alcantar got the start in the circle. She tossed four full innings, striking out four batters. In her shift, she gave up four runs from four hits, a walk and she hit an Evangel.
Jaidyn Stephens replaced Alcantar to start the fifth and finished the game. Stephens surrendered just two hits and struck out two batters in her innings of work.
Montreat only had two other base runners entering the bottom of the sixth inning. The Cavs could only muster one more run during the event, and it came from a leadoff solo jack to left from Hernandez. Offensively, the Cavs swung for three hits in the game with Hernandez going 2-for-3 on a double and a home run. Knight was the only other Cavalier to have a hit.
The Cavs couldn't get a win in their excursion, but they look forward to more Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) softball when they host the (RV) Reinhardt University Eagles on Thursday. The doubleheader is slated for 4 and 6 p.m.
