Cavs drop game in Florida

BABSON PARK, Fla.— The Montreat women's lacrosse team traveled down to Babson Park, Fla., about an hour-and-a-half south of Orlando, for a match against the Webber International University Warriors. The hosts came out victorious in their season opener against the Cavs by a score of 18-1. With the defeat, Montreat fell to a 0-2 record.
 
The Warriors scored early and often as they tallied eight goals against Montreat in the opening quarter. Playing with 11 Cavaliers the entire game, Montreat was already at a disadvantage. At the half, they trailed WIU 13-0.
 
The Cavs played better defensively after halftime, as only five goals went through the net for the home team. Two were scored in the third quarter and three in the fourth frame. With just three minutes left in the affair, Montreat refused to go home empty-handed. Grace Wiegand scored on a shot assisted by Ruthann Stout, bringing the score to 17-1. The goal was the fourth from the Cavs so far in the 2025 campaign. The Warriors tacked on one more goal to conclude the match, 18-1.
 
Wiegand scored her second goal of the season. She also netted one in her last appearance against North Greenville University and now leads the team with two tallies. Stout collected the first assist of the year for Montreat. Marley Smith recorded three shots, all of which were free-position attempts, with one on target during the contest. Between the sticks for the Cavs, Tayah Quinn made 13 saves in her performance, surpassing the mark from her previous game of 12 saves.
 
The Cavs won four draw controls and gathered six ground balls in the game. The Cavs committed 22 turnovers while only forcing 10 out of the hosts. The Cavs also converted 10-of-18 clears compared to 21-of-23 for Webber. The Warriors had more shots (36-7) and shots on target (31-5) than Montreat. WIU was issued eight green and three yellow cards while Montreat accrued one of each variety.
 
The Cavs will square off next against the Lees-McRae College Bobcats this coming Wednesday, Feb. 19 in Banner Elk, N.C. The nonconference game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
