WILLIAMSBURG, Ky.— The Montreat College women's wrestling squad closed out its time at the Patriot Duals on Saturday with two additional team dual matches. Battling a pair of nationally-ranked Mid-South Conference (MSC) programs at the University of the Cumberlands, the Cavaliers dropped their final two clashes of the weekend, falling to 11-5 overall and 2-5 against MSC teams in the process.
Opening the day against the No. 19-ranked Campbellsville University Tigers, the Cavs jumped out to a swift 15-0 advantage.
Morgan Repasky and
Sheyla Ochoa Salgado were the beneficiaries of forfeits at 103 and 117, respectively, while
Dinayah Vazquez pinned her opposition in 3:44 at 110. Campbellsville responded, however, rattling off six consecutive victories to clinch the dual.
Daniella Jenkins tacked on five points via forfeit in the final bout, and both
Izzy Campbell and
Shay Potter scored a point in decision defeats. Still, Montreat landed on the wrong side of a 25-22 scoreline.
For the second straight day, the Cavaliers took on the eighth-ranked hosts. Cumberlands etched out a 31-16 triumph on Friday, and it seized a 27-19 win on Saturday. Vazquez and Ochoa Salgado registered pins early in the showdown, but Montreat couldn't get back onto the scoreboard until the final two matchups. Despite
Audrey Gribble's 11-0 tech fall in the 180-lb weight class and
Emilia Hill's forfeit at 207, the Cavs were unable to fully erase their deficit.
Montreat was also slated to face No. 1 Life University on Saturday, but the Running Eagles had to withdraw from their final two duals due to personal matters. As a result, the Cavaliers' last matchup was ultimately canceled.
"We're looking forward to finishing the semester strong in the classroom and on the mat," said head coach
Koby Reyes.
Competing once more before Christmas break, the Montreat College women's wrestling team heads next to Emory & Henry University on Friday, Dec. 12 for the Wasps Open. Bouts are slated to begin at 10 a.m. in Emory, Va.
