Women’s track & field continues success in last event of 2025

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.— Montreat College's women's track & field team traveled to JDL Fast Track on Saturday to compete in the Visit Winston-Salem College Kick-off. The single day event saw 27 different teams participate, with several NCAA Division I programs also in the mix.

Montreat submitted 18 entries across 11 events. During the meet, the Cavaliers achieved two school records and one NAIA 'A' standard. The Cavs also set five new personal bests and matched a personal best twice.

In the 60m hurdles, Emma Barnes set a new school record with a time of 9.34 seconds. Barnes held the initial record of 9.59 that she set during the 2024 season. She finished 17th of 37 competitors in the event. Barnes also tied a personal best in the 200m race. She placed 28th of 57 runners, clocking an effort of 26.63 seconds.

Heather Murphy continued to light it up against quality competition. She set a new school record as well, this time in the 3000m. Her time of 9:40.27 was good enough for fourth place and beat former teammate Dylan Garcia's record, which was set last season. Murphy surpassed the NAIA 'A' standard with her 3000m time as well. Also in the event, Macy Parks set a new career best by less than a second with her time of 10:28.74. She finished 15th among the 40 participants.

Both Cavaliers also raced in the mile. Murphy crossed the line in fifth with an effort of 5:06.06. She set a new personal-best time with the result. Parks finished eighth, clocking in at 5:16.16. Also ending in the top-30, Anna Baugh completed the race in 5:38.61. In her event debut, she crossed the line in 25th.

In an event debut as well, newcomer Peyton Stasko ran a strong 400m race. She finished 15th of 31 with her time of 1:02.03 and was just over a second away from the school record.

Both of Montreat's runners in the 800m placed inside the top-30. Jasmine Hernandez and Natalia Nieto finished in consecutive positions in the event. Hernandez tied her career best in the race with a 2:31.01, good for 26th. Nieto was in 27th and delivered a 2:31.57 effort.

In the shot put, Isis Rain Giron finished 29th out of 42 throwers with her distance of 10.13m. Giron also participated in the weight throw. She completed the event in 27th out of the 30 throwers. After securing a new personal best on Thursday, she did it again on Saturday by achieving a distance of 10.72m. Fellow teammate Shelby Brown finished 29th in the event with a toss of 9.82m.
