Cavs falter in Dayton

DAYTON, Tenn.— Montreat's women's volleyball squad visited the Bryan College Lions Friday night for an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) match in which the Cavaliers fell by a final score of 3-0. The Cavs dropped to a record of 0-6 (0-6 AAC), and the Lions advanced to 2-20 overall and 1-5 in conference play.

Montreat opened the first set with a strong showing, securing early points through a combination of nine kills and four service aces. The team's defensive strategy was evident with three blocks in the set. Despite the visitors' efforts, Bryan capitalized on Montreat's six attack errors to gain crucial points. Later in the set, Allie Anderson scored on a kill for the Cavs, increasing their lead to 16-11. The Lions refused to go down in the opening frame as they went on a 6-0 run after trailing Montreat 19-13. The Cavaliers had set point at 24-23, but they ultimately lost three straight points to fall in set one, 26-24.

The second frame saw no leader through the first 10 points, with both teams even at five. From there, the close contest continued with the Lions on top, 12-11. Sarah Alderman and Elizabeth Harrington provided efficient swings to score points in the set. The home team went on a 7-1 run later in the frame to set up a 22-15 score. Despite the Cavs' attempts to close the gap, the set ended with Bryan securing a 25-18 victory.

Montreat struggled to keep pace with Bryan as the home team took control heading into the third set. Leading 9-6, the Lions kept the Cavaliers at bay, making sure Montreat was always trailing by at least two points. The closest the Cavs got to BC in the set was trailing 13-11. Bryan went on to secure the final frame by scoring 12 of the next 15 points, winning 25-14.

Harrington led the Cavaliers with eight kills and three blocks. Anderson delivered four service aces and added 11 digs from the libero position. Cizzie Griffin facilitated the offense with 10 assists and contributed two service aces as well. Maggie Stewart added to the defensive effort with three total blocks alongside four kills.

Collectively, the Lions had more kills (34-22), aces (10-8), assists (31-19) and digs (42-41) than the Cavs. Defensively, Montreat secured five blocks, while BC had three. Montreat had a team hitting percentage of -.010 in the match, while Bryan finished with a mark of .149.

"We didn't rise to the moment today, and that has to change," said head coach Cristina Viera. "The talent is here, and now it's about showing up when it counts. Tomorrow gives us the chance to do just that."

Montreat's next action will be on Saturday as the squad remains in Tennessee to face off against the Tennessee Wesleyan University Bulldogs. First serve of the AAC contest is slated for 11 a.m.
