Women’s soccer shut out at Brenau

GAINESVILLE, Ga.— The Montreat College women's soccer team fell to the Brenau University Golden Tigers 1-0 on Saturday in Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) action. With the road defeat, the Cavaliers moved to 6-7-1 (5-5-1 AAC) on the year. Meanwhile, BU improved to 7-6-1 (5-5-1 AAC) following its victory.

The first half began with Montreat focusing on strong defensive efforts, led by goalkeeper Anna Weissenfluh, who made several key saves against Brenau. Offensively, the Cavs' opportunities included a series of corner kicks by Leigh Harpel and shots on goal from Katie Burton and Rozsa Williford, which were saved by the Golden Tigers' goalie. Despite multiple attempts on both sides, neither team found the back of the net. The period concluded with the score level at 0-0.

Montreat pushed forward to open the second frame, but a shot by Williford was blocked early. Taking a swing of its own, Brenau capitalized and seized a 1-0 advantage with a strike in the 52nd minute. The Cavaliers responded in turn with increased offensive pressure, including a shot by Kylie Ridings that was ultimately saved.

Continuing to apply pressure, Madelyn Schultz and Keira Stegman both forced saves from the hosts' netminder. Despite several corner kicks facilitated by Harpel and additional attempts from Williford, Montreat was unable to find the back of the net. The contest concluded with the visitors trailing 1-0, unable to cash in on their offensive chances.

For the match, Brenau registered two more shot attempts (15-13), but the Cavs placed one additional try on frame (7-6). Montreat also notched a significant 10-1 edge in corner kicks across the 90-minute contest.

Weissenfluh made five saves while facing six total shots in the defeat. Williford contributed offensively with four shots, two of which were on target. Burton added pressure on the opposing defense with two shot attempts, one being on goal. Schultz also took two shots, with one landing on target, showcasing her involvement in the attack.

The next challenge for Montreat comes on Wednesday, Oct. 22 as the Cavaliers travel to Pikeville, Ky., to take on the University of Pikeville Bears. Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m.
