Women’s soccer plays Columbia to scoreless draw

BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C.— The Montreat College women's soccer team and Columbia College played to a scoreless draw Wednesday night at Pulliam Stadium. With the 0-0 result, the Cavaliers moved to 3-5-1 overall and 2-3-1 in Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) play, while the Koalas shifted to 4-2-4 (1-2-3 AAC) on the year.

The first half between the Cavs and the visitors began with both teams establishing their defensive presence. Montreat managed to create early opportunities, with Maddie Ellis taking a blocked shot via a free kick at 4:10, as well as multiple attempts from Rozsa Williford and Kylie Ridings that narrowly missed the frame.

As the half progressed, Columbia responded with offensive pressure, recording several shots that were either blocked or off-target. Montreat's defense held firm, with Anna Weissenfluh maintaining a clean sheet. The period closed with Sam Aalbue's header attempt going wide, in addition to a last-minute blocked shot, keeping the score level at 0-0.

The second half commenced with the hosts maintaining pressure on Columbia's defense. Early attempts by Williford and Natalie Hall were saved by CC's goalkeeper, continuing the scoreless tension. Montreat's defense, anchored by Weissenfluh, successfully handled the visitors' offensive attempts, including a save in the 58th minute. Despite multiple corner opportunities and shots, the Cavs were unable to break the deadlock, with Aalbue's header going just above the crossbar late in the period. As the frame drew to a close, both teams remained scoreless, and with neither side able to convert their pressure into goals, the match resulted in a 0-0 draw.

"I think that was the most complete game our backs have played," said head coach Kristin Eggert. "Anna kept things locked down for the clean sheet."

Not only were the Cavaliers and the Koalas level on the scoresheet, but they also were even or close in multiple statistical categories. The home side ended the night with two additional shot attempts (12-10), but each team registered three shots on goal, three saves, four corner kicks and 13 fouls.

Weissenfluh recorded a shutout, making three stops to keep the game scoreless. Aalbue led the team with four shots, applying consistent pressure on the opposition's defense. Williford contributed with three shots, one of which was on target. Jocelyn Stanley managed one shot on goal, maintaining the offensive effort.

In their next game, the Cavs travel to Dayton, Tenn., to face Bryan College on Saturday, Oct. 4. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m.
