Women's wrestling falls by narrow margin at BPC

MOUNT VERNON, Ga.— The Montreat women's wrestling team faced off against the Brewton-Parker College Barons Tuesday evening. The two foes met earlier this campaign at the Liberty Duals on Nov. 16. The Cavs got the best of BPC the first time, 29-17, but Brewton-Parker got revenge on Tuesday, winning the dual 24-23. With the defeat, the Cavaliers moved to 4-4 on the year and 1-2 against Mid-South Conference (MSC) programs.

Annastasia Skoda got the ball rolling at 131 for Montreat with a tech fall in under a minute after consecutive gator rolls for points. Skoda took down her opponent, and she never looked back, racking up all her points consecutively. The Cavs led 4-0 after the bout.

Brewton-Parker answered at 138 as Kathleen Fisher won by a forfeit to take the lead, 5-4. The Barons kept their foot on the gas as Skyy Hargrove defeated Montreat's Uriah Peters-Gutierrez by decision (5-4) in an upper body matchup with a lot of hand fighting and positioning. With the win, Brewton-Parker took an 8-5 lead.

Montreat stormed back with 15 points of its own thanks to Marissa Delacruz, who won by forfeit at 160, and Nicole Lewis, who was leading 9-6 until her opponent suffered an injury. Audrey Gribble also won from a forfeit after Lewis' match. All three Cavs added five points to the team's total, bringing the Cavs ahead 20-8.

Morgan Repasky won at 103 in an exciting and scrappy match, surviving multiple shots in the process. Repasky had a chance to pin her opponent as time dwindled down; however, time expired before she could capitalize. Repasky won by decision (8-4) to go up in the dual, 23-9.

Three Brewton-Parker victories from forfeits eventually sealed the deal to win the dual. Tashayla West, Aliyah Gonzalez and Jamesa Robinson all won by forfeit for the Lady Barons to edge out the Cavs by a final score of 24-23.

Montreat returns to action this Sunday, Jan. 19 in Bristol, Tenn. as it competes in the Tornado Open.
