MONTREAT, N.C.— Coming off a thrilling five-set victory inside McAlister Gymnasium last night, the Montreat volleyball team took to the court again on Friday for an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) matchup versus the St. Andrews University Knights. Picking up right where they left off, the Cavaliers rolled to a three-set sweep of the visitors, improving to 2-0 both overall and in conference play.
A pair of
Katie Alexander service aces coupled with kills from
Elizabeth Harrington and
Kamryn Wolf set the tone right out of the gate. Two additional Harrington kills expanded the hosts' lead to 7-1 before St. Andrews (0-7, 0-1 AAC) trimmed the gap to 10-8. Despite the early response, the Knights had no long-term answers as Montreat rattled off 10 of the ensuing 11 points. Eventually, the Cavs captured the initial frame, 25-11.
Seventeen kills, including eight from Wolf, powered the hosts to a 25-19 win in set two. A native of Lambertville, Mich., Wolf gave the Cavaliers some breathing room with back-to-back kills midway through the frame. SAU managed to stay within arm's length, but
Sophie Duckworth's second kill of the set moved the home team within one frame of a sweep.
The third and final set was Montreat's most dominant of the night. Sixteen kills and a .577 hitting percentage aided the hosts in blowing out the visitors, 25-8. Defensively, the Cavs were stout also. Montreat surrendered just one kill and a -.190 attacking percentage in the third, both match-lows for St. Andrews.
"The team played with great energy and controlled the game from start to finish," said head coach
Cristina Viera. "It was a total team effort, and I'm proud of how we executed."
The Knights hit negatively in each set, including -.117 overall to go along with just eight kills. While both teams had six blocks, the hosts totaled 45 kills on a superb .300 attacking percentage. Montreat also had significantly more digs (49-33), assists (42-7) and service aces (9-2).
Wolf paced the Cavaliers with 16 kills, while Harrington concluded the night with eight.
Cate Hale and Alexander finished with four aces each. Alexander (18 assists),
Reese Davis (eight assists) and
Cizzie Griffin (seven assists) shared the setting duties, while Davis registered a team-high 14 digs. Both
Maggie Stewart and Harrington contributed three blocks at the net.
Montreat hits the road for the first time this season on Tuesday when it faces off against the Truett McConnell University Bears. First serve is slated for 6:30 p.m. in Cleveland, Ga.
