MONTREAT, N.C.— The Montreat baseball team rounded out its Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) series with the Milligan University Buffaloes at Newell Field Saturday afternoon. Due to an 8-3 scoreline in favor of the visitors, the Cavaliers dropped their final home game of the season to move to 25-21-1 (14-12 AAC) on the year.
Milligan (29-16, 17-10 AAC) began the contest with a 2-run homer in the top of the second, but
Tommy Ramos responded in the bottom half of the frame as he blasted a solo shot down the left field line to cut the deficit in half.
The visitors, who scored in four straight trips to the plate, then extended their advantage out to 7-1 through the top of the fifth; however, Montreat pulled two back in the home half of the inning. Bases loaded walks from
Caleb Abshier and
Zeb Marquis made it 7-3 with four innings to go.
Although the Cavaliers recorded six base knocks, including a 2-4 performance by
Jaider Morelos, the Buffaloes added an insurance run in the eighth to complete their 5-run victory.
Tyler Best threw 1 1/3 innings of 1-hit baseball in relief, while
Elian Cuevas surrendered one hit over his three frames. Cuevas also struck out three MU batters.
Ryan Henrickson closed out the competition with a hitless ninth.
