WILLIAMSBURG, Ky.— Following yesterday's first-round triumph, the Montreat women's lacrosse team faced a stiff test in the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Tournament semifinals Friday afternoon. Battling the No. 2 seed and No. 2-ranked squad in the country, the No. 3-seeded Cavaliers fell to the University of the Cumberlands Patriots by a score of 26-5. The defeat meant the Cavs ended their season with a 7-8 record.
Cumberlands (18-1) controlled the matchup from the opening draw control, recording the initial five goals in the first 4:22 of the contest. Moments later,
Hannah Jarboe got Montreat on the scoreboard by burying a feed from
Madison Terrell to trim the gap to four; however, the Patriots built a 10-1 edge.
Grace Wiegand fired home a shot from
Kate Gauntlett, but another UC strike made it 11-2 through 15 minutes.
Though Jarboe and Terrell combined again at the start of the second frame with the former netting her second goal of the competition, Cumberlands grabbed a 16-3 advantage entering halftime thanks to five tallies.
The hosts went on to replicate their second-quarter output in the third period, outscoring the Cavaliers 5-2. This time Gauntlett benefited from a pass out of the stick of Terrell before Wiegand finished off Terrell's fourth assist to make the score 21-5 with 15 minutes to play.
UC went on to claim all five fourth-quarter goals in its 26-5 victory. In the end, the Patriots held leads in most statistical categories including shot attempts (34-14), shots on target (32-13), draw controls (24-10), clears (11-8), opposing team turnovers (15-13), ground balls (13-11) and caused turnovers (11-5).
Individually, Jarboe and Terrell each collected three draw controls, while Wiegand caused a pair of turnovers. Terrell,
Kim Aalbue and
Adara Vouriotis all scooped up two ground balls. Splitting time in net,
Chloe Andrews and
Ruthann Stout each totaled three saves as the Cavaliers wrapped up their 2024 campaign.
