Softball Falls in Road Doubleheader at No. 24 Reinhardt

WALESKA, Ga.— Facing a stiff test in a nationally ranked Reinhardt University Eagles side on the road, the Montreat softball team continued Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) action with a doubleheader in Georgia Saturday afternoon. With 13-1 and 10-2 scorelines versus the No. 24-ranked Eagles, the Cavaliers' record dropped to 26-14 (8-12 AAC) on the year.

Reinhardt (30-8, 19-1 AAC) showed no mercy in the opening contest, plating two in the first frame and 10 in the second inning to lead 12-0 going into the third.

The Cavaliers struggled to reach base as the Eagles' pitcher retired the initial 12 batters she saw before Elizabeth Gergen smacked a solo home run to left field to get the visitors on the scoreboard. Gergen's jack proved to be the lone run, hit and baserunner allowed by RU as the home side outhit Montreat 15-1 in a 13-1 5-inning affair.

Leah Coffing surrendered just one run on six hits through her three innings in the circle. The Daytona Beach, Fla. native struck out four in her relief appearance.

In the second competition, Reinhardt scored the first five runs of the ballgame to go up 5-0 heading into the third frame.

Montreat then responded with its first three hits of the matchup in the top of the third, cutting the deficit down to three. After Ashley Steadman and Amayia Hernandez both singled, a 2-RBI double by Gergen drove in both baserunners.

Sage Dowis and Hannah Henderson tallied base knocks in the fourth and Haley Fethke doubled in the fifth; however, the Eagles tacked on runs in all five of their trips to the plate to walk-off in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI double in the 10-2 game. Six different Cavaliers had hits as RU doubled the visitors up in the category 12-6.

Softball returns home for its next doubleheader, an AAC twin bill against the Bryan College Lions, on Monday. First pitch of game one between the Cavaliers and the Lions at Roxy Hines Memorial Softball Field is scheduled for 5 p.m.
