Terrell Sets Program Points Record, Women’s Lacrosse Clips Owls in Home Finale

BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C.— The Montreat women's lacrosse team closed out its 2024 home slate on a high note Wednesday evening as Madison Terrell set the program's single-game points record during a 24-3 non-conference win over the Warren Wilson College Owls. With the victory over the NCAA Division III program, the Cavaliers improved to 5-7 on the season.

Montreat scored 29 seconds into the contest and never looked back, seizing a 10-0 lead before the initial quarter ended. Terrell powered the Cav offense, scoring four goals and dishing out a trio of assists in the frame. Grace Wiegand, McKinley Edmondson and Hannah Jarboe each tallied a pair of strikes as the hosts established a double-digit advantage through merely 15 minutes of action.

Warren Wilson (4-6) registered its first two goals of the night in the second quarter, but Montreat answered each Owls' tally with a pair of its own. Alex Chapman recorded her third goal of the season, while Wiegand finished out her hat trick and Terrell scored twice more. As a result, the Cavaliers entered halftime with a comfortable 14-2 lead.

Like they did on the scoreboard, the Cavs also owned significant edges in shots (18-5), shots on goal (16-4) and draw controls (11-6). Montreat committed three fewer turnovers (16-13), caused one additional miscue (8-7) and accrued three more clears (10-7) compared to its counterpart. Chloe Andrews totaled two saves through 30 minutes, while Terrell surpassed her single-game career-high with six first-half goals.

Jarboe and Edmondson polished off their hat tricks in the third frame as the home side outscored the visitors, 5-1. Terrell contributed a goal and two assists as well during the quarter, aiding Montreat in establishing a 19-3 advantage with 15 minutes to go.

Chapman scored twice in the final frame to secure her first career hat trick, and Terrell once again tacked on a goal and two assists to cap off a record night. In the end, the Cavaliers utilized their 5-0 fourth to finish out a smooth 24-3 win.

"Madison had a career night to propel us," said head coach Kayla Bone. "She did a great job of setting us up for success, and we worked really well together as a team. This was a great way to round out our home slate for the season."

Terrell finished the night with eight goals and seven assists, both of which were career-best numbers. Combined, the 15-point performance broke the Montreat women's lacrosse single-game record of 14 points. Edmondson (5G, 1A), Jarboe (4G, 1A), Wiegand (4G) and Chapman (3G) rounded out the rest of the offense for the home team. Defensively, Andrews made three saves as she improved to 3-2 this year.

Talking about her record-setting night, Terrell said, "Whenever I wasn't able to get inside and get past my defender, I just looked for my teammates and relied on them to get open and get the job done."

As a squad, the Cavs cruised to victory behind dominant statistical edges in shots (34-12), shots on goal (30-6), successful clears (21-20), draw controls (18-12), free position tallies (4-0) and opponent turnovers (24-19).

The Montreat women's lacrosse team concludes its 2024 regular-season campaign on Saturday with an Appalachian Athletic Conference contest at St. Andrews University. Opening draw control is set for 1 p.m. in Laurinburg, N.C.
