Men’s Lacrosse Dropped in Conference Battle at Point

WEST POINT, Ga.— The Montreat men's lacrosse team went back on the road Saturday afternoon for an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) showdown against the Point University Skyhawks in West Point, Ga. While the Cavaliers opened the scoring, they couldn't keep up with the hosts' offensive output as they dropped a 21-5 final and fell to 2-12 (1-6 AAC) on the year.

Eli King set up Johnny Miles' 10th goal of the season as the Cavs took a 1-0 lead just 2:32 into the contest, but the Skyhawks rattled off four straight tallies before the initial quarter concluded. Thanks to the scoring run, PU owned a 4-1 edge through 15 minutes of play.

Point (6-7, 2-4 AAC) extended its consecutive goals streak to six before Grayson Scott deposited a strike into the hosts' net, trimming the Montreat deficit to 6-2 with 8:47 remaining in the half; however, the Skyhawks once again closed out the quarter in strong fashion. PU notched five scores in a row, including three in the final 83 seconds to enter the half up 11-2.

At the break, the hosts owned advantages in shots (25-14), shots on goal (17-9), ground balls (23-13), faceoffs (9-4) and caused turnovers (8-3). Jay Chance, who made his first start of the season as a goalkeeper, registered six saves across 30 minutes of action.

The Cavaliers placed six shots on goal in the third quarter, but Point's goalie stopped each attempt to keep the visitors off the scoreboard during the frame. Meanwhile, the home side racked up a 5-goal period, which allowed it to maintain a 16-2 lead with just 15 minutes to go.

Miles' second strike of the day, which came following a feed from Scott, gave Montreat its first goal of the half less than two minutes into the fourth quarter. Meanwhile, Chance moved into the attack during the second half, and he collected a pair of goals to close out the Cavs' offensive production. Point scored five times in the frame, though, and it sprinted past the visitors to the tune of a 21-5 victory.

Montreat closed the gap in shots on goal to five (30-25), but the Skyhawks' goalie made 20 saves while surrendering just five scores. Point also captured edges in shots (55-39), ground balls (38-27), caused turnovers (13-6) and faceoffs won (14-11). Brandon Sandoval made three saves while playing the entire second half in net for the Cavaliers. Chance and Miles each scored twice, and Scott accrued a goal and an assist.

The Montreat men's lacrosse team plays its final road game of the 2024 regular season next Saturday at Tennessee Wesleyan University. Opening faceoff between the Cavaliers and the Bulldogs is slated for 1 p.m. in Athens, Tenn.
