Women’s Lacrosse Fails to Keep Pace with Pfeiffer

MISENHEIMER, N.C.— The Montreat women's lacrosse team continued its road trip with a competition at Pfeiffer University in Misenheimer, N.C Saturday night. After 60 minutes of action, the Cavaliers were bested by the Falcons, 24-10, falling to 0-5 on the year.

Madison Terrell opened the scoring with a goal 32 seconds into the matchup, but Pfeiffer responded to lead 2-1 less than a minute into the game. The torrid scoring start then continued as Hannah Jarboe and Terrell answered to hand the Cavs a 3-2 edge only 3:51 in. Despite the solid start, Montreat registered a mere one of the ensuing nine strikes as Jarboe separated seven Falcon goals to end the first quarter with a 9-4 deficit.

Though the home side went up 10-4 early in the second, Grace Wiegand helped the Cavaliers stay relatively close with a pair of goals within 4:20 of game time. From there, the Falcons outscored Montreat 5-1 over the latter portion of the period with McKinley Edmondson bringing the Cavs within 10 (17-7) in the closing seconds of the half.

At the break, Pfeiffer (2-3) led the shot attempts, 23-13, and the shots on goal, 21-11. The Falcons also edged the Cavaliers in successful clears, 6-5, and draw controls, 18-7, through 30 minutes. Although the Cavs trailed on the scoreboard, the visitors collected more ground balls (7-5) and free position shots (5-2) than their counterparts. Both sides caused six turnovers and Chloe Andrews totaled four first-half saves in net for Montreat.

After another trio of goals from PU throughout the third quarter, Terrell completed her hat trick with her 15th goal of the season to make it 20-8 with 15 minutes remaining. In the last frame, Jarboe followed suit with her third goal of the matchup and Adara Vouriotis registered the Cavs' 10th and final goal midway through the quarter; however, the Falcons scored four additional goals in the fourth to seal their 24-10 triumph over Montreat.

Pfeiffer finished with more attempted shots (43-21), shots on target (36-19) and draw controls (25-11), while the Cavaliers concluded with 15 ground balls to the Falcons' 11 and less turnovers (14-13). The home team notched one more caused turnover (12-11), two more successful clears (14-12) and both teams converted three of six free position shots in the competition. Andrews ended the night with 12 saves thanks to eight second-half stops.

Women's lacrosse closes out its road stretch by opening conference play at Truett McConnell University on Wednesday. First draw control in Cleveland, Ga. is scheduled for 5 p.m.
