BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C.— The Montreat women's lacrosse team battled against the No. 2-ranked Reinhardt University Eagles at Pulliam Stadium Saturday afternoon. Despite a valiant effort from the home side, Reinhardt bested Montreat 26-5, dropping the Cavaliers' record to 2-6 overall and 2-1 in Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) action.
Reinhardt (7-1, 1-0 AAC) got on the board just 37 seconds into the contest, but
Madison Terrell responded to level the score at one a couple minutes later thanks to her team-leading 25
th strike of the year. Though the Eagles fired off another three goals,
Adara Vouriotis made it 4-2 with her fourth tally of the season. In spite of the two scores from the home side, RU ended the frame with seven unanswered to lead 11-2 through 15 minutes.
The visitors then notched five of the six goals in the ensuing period to go ahead 16-3 at the intermission. Terrell grabbed her second of the contest to break up the Reinhardt attack in the second quarter.
Hannah Jarboe began the third period with her 21
st goal of the season, cutting the deficit to 12 (16-4); however, the Eagles responded by closing out the quarter with five straight goals to lead 21-4 with 15 minutes to play.
RU ultimately extended its advantage to as many as 21, netting the initial four goals of the final frame to do so.
Grace Wiegand made it 25-5 with 1:58 on the clock, but a shot just before the buzzer allowed the visitors to ensure their 26-5 win.
In the end, Reinhardt outshot the Cavs 49-7, 34-5 on target. The Eagles also controlled possession with more draw controls (24-10), ground balls (26-12), caused turnovers (11-1), successful clears (12-10) and turnovers by opposition (23-11). Individually,
McKinley Edmondson registered a team-high four ground balls, while Wiegand led the squad with four draw controls.
Chloe Andrews and
Ruthann Stout each made four saves in goal for the Cavaliers.
Women's lacrosse looks to bounce back with another home contest on Wednesday. Opening draw control at Pulliam Stadium between the Cavaliers and the Warren Wilson College Owls is slated for 6 p.m.
