WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.— Montreat's women's track & field team competed at the Visit Winston-Salem College Kick-off on Saturday. Although there were no team scores, the Cavs won an event and broke a pair of school records.
On the day, Montreat participated in eight events. They posted 19 entries, with four of those being debut performances. The Cavaliers hit four NAIA standards and set seven new personal bests.
The 3000m race was one for the books.
Dylan Garcia snatched the event outright and broke a school record with her 9:47.27 time. Garcia was not the only Cavalier to break the program's previous best mark. Freshman
Heather Murphy finished fourth and also shattered the prior record with her effort of 9:53.14. Both Garcia and Murphy met the NAIA "A" standard with their efforts. Sophomore
Macy Parks (11
th; 10:29.53) shattered her previous career-best time in the event.
The mile did not disappoint either. Lightning struck twice as Garcia broke another school record by nearly 10 seconds after placing fourth in the event (4:58.08). Again, Murphy broke the existing record by fractions of a second, this time placing seventh in the event (5:06.43). Garcia met the "A" standard while Murphy surpassed the "B" standard with their times. Just like in the 3000m,
Macy Parks (9
th; 5:14.28) set another personal record on the day.
The Cavaliers found success in the 600m race as well.
Kaylene Manternach took second with a time of 1:41.34, which was good enough to set a new personal best. Manternach was 0.12 seconds off the school record in the event held by current teammate
Emily Standifer. Standifer also competed in the race and finished sixth with a 1:42.76 showing. The other two Cav runners in the event,
Yessenia Castellanos (1:43.82) and
Natalia Nieto (1:44.32), also set new personal bests with their top-10 finishes.
