Women’s basketball notches back-to-back AAC victories

ASHEVILLE, N.C.— Montreat's women's basketball team hosted the St. Andrews University Knights in another Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) matchup Wednesday night. After coming off a 1-1 performance at The Show over Thanksgiving break, the Cavs got the best of the Knights in style with an 85-58 win.

Montreat (6-4, 4-2 AAC) was caught slightly off guard at the beginning of the contest. St. Andrews (3-7, 1-4 AAC) held a lead of as many as six points in the first quarter. Multiple baskets from Karis Alexander and Virginia Edmondson kept Montreat knocking at the door. The Cavs eventually cut the Knights' lead to just one at the end of the first frame (17-16).

The second quarter was when the Cavaliers decided to turn up the heat. Dropping 30 points in the period as a team, two Montreat players had double digits in the frame alone. Edmondson notched 16 points and three steals while Rymiah Sanders tallied 10 points and two steals. Each member of the duo had at least one rebound and an assist in the quarter as well. At the break, the Cavs found themselves up 46-34.

Montreat continued to suck the life out of the Knights in the second half. During the opening frame after the intermission, the Cavs doubled up the visitors, outscoring them 23-11. Sanders led the quarter with seven points while junior Tresalyn Roberts was on her tail with six. The Cavaliers cruised to victory in the fourth and managed to outscore SAU by three. Ferrara scored eight of her 10 points in the quarter, making sure to hit double figures by the end of the contest.

Edmondson concluded her night with a season-high 28 points. She also added five steals, five assists and three rebounds. Two other Cavs ended with double digits. Sanders finished with 19 points, and Ferrara added 10 points of her own on the scoresheet. Ferrara shot 2-for-2 from downtown and had three boards as well. Katie Alexander had an efficient performance, leading the squad with seven rebounds. She also tied for the team lead with six assists.

Montreat was red hot from three-point range knocking down 50.0 percent of its attempts (7-14 3-pt FG). The hosts were also 34-of-73 from the floor (46.6 percent) and hit 66.7 percent of their foul shots (10-15 FT). The Cavs led several statistical categories at the end of the contest. They had more points in the paint (50-24), rebounds (51-36), assists (27-16) and fast break points (29-11).

"It took us a little bit to settle into the game and make the necessary adjustments, but our team found a way," said head coach Jamie Moore. "Virginia Edmondson had a great game tonight on both ends. Our post players showed up big tonight as well. It was great to have so many of our players making an impact on the game."

The Cavaliers play host again next Tuesday when the Brenau University Golden Tigers come to Asheville, N.C. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m.
