CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky.— The Montreat men's basketball team made a weekend trip to Kentucky as they played the first of two games on the campus of Campbellsville University Friday afternoon. The Cavs suffered their first loss of the season to Lindsey Wilson College out of the Mid-South Conference by a score of 106-61.
These two contests wrap up the early portion of Montreat's nonconference schedule before Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) competition starts with a home game against Columbia International University on Nov. 13.
The Cavaliers (4-1) were put on their heels early as the Blue Raiders (5-0) jumped out to 20-4 lead. After a media timeout, the Cavs found some momentum, scoring eight quick points. A
Jack Keller triple and a
Dyllan Barnwell slam highlighted the stretch. The Blue Raiders continued their hot shooting, though, and finished on top at the break, 51-27.
Montreat looked more confident entering the second half of play. With shooting percentages rising and turnovers dropping, the Cavs competed with a sense of improvement. Keller nailed another three to open the second half scoring for the Cavs; however, Lindsey Wilson continued to turn the heat up and scored 55 points in the latter half. Both teams rotated their benches throughout the second frame to allow other players to get a shot on the floor.
Montreat still managed to have three players with double-digit points despite the loss. Senior
Jack Keller led the way with 11, while
Dyllan Barnwell and
Lamont McNeill Jr. followed closely with 10 each.
Elijah Carson had a good day cleaning up the glass as he was the only Cavalier with double-digit rebounds (10).
RJ Manginello had the most assists with five. There were three different Montreat players with a block and four with a steal. The only player to have one of each was senior
Gannon Stockton.
The Cavs did a great job on the boards as a team as well. Montreat totaled 17 offensive rebounds to Lindsey Wilson's 10. The Cavaliers also had more second chance points with 18 while the Blue Raiders had 11. Montreat struggled on the offensive end shooting 31.1 percent (23-74 FG) from the floor and 14.3 percent (3-21 3-pt FG) behind the arc. The Cavs were also only able to hit 60.0 percent (12-20 FT) of their free throws. The three percentage marks are the squad's lowest in a game this season.
For the Cavs, they look forward to their next matchup tomorrow as they will play at the Campbellsville University Tigers. With AAC play right around the corner, Montreat hopes to wrap up its early nonconference schedule with a win. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
