MILLIGAN, Tenn.— The Montreat volleyball team continued its away stretch as it visited the Milligan University Buffaloes in a late morning Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) match. The Buffaloes defended their home court as they swept the Cavaliers in Milligan, Tenn. With the defeat, the Cavs fell to 7-3 (7-3 AAC) on the year.
The match started an even contest as
Karly Horn tallied a kill and a service ace, tying the set at four apiece. Milligan (17-7, 12-3 AAC) answered back with a 9-0 run that included two aces.
Elizabeth Harrington silenced the momentum with three kills in a stretch where the Cavs competed towards an 18-10 score in favor of the Buffaloes. After the competitive span, the hosts scored seven of the next nine points to take set one by a score of 25-12.
Montreat found itself on the short end of a 15-8 scoreline midway through frame two. The Cavaliers' eight points in this part of the set were spread out between six different attackers. A short 3-0 Buffs run interrupted by a Cav timeout created some momentum for the away team. Horn picked up four more kills in the set, and
Katie Alexander picked up a service ace as well. Harrington grabbed two blocks and
Reese Davis collected a kill and an assist during the run. The Cavs cut the Milligan lead by two, but the Buffaloes finished off the set with another short 3-0 spurt to win 25-15.
The concluding set was one of runs. The hosts started out hot, coming out to a 16-5 lead thanks to two blocks and two service aces. Horn sparked a quick 4-0 stretch with four straight kills, three of which were assisted by Davis. The Buffaloes answered with a match-sealing 9-0 run of their own to claim the frame, 25-9.
In the contest, Horn led the Cavs with 10 kills. Davis paced the visitors with 11 assists, and
Lexi Wible led the way with a season-high 10 digs. Milligan controlled the team statistical outputs with advantages in hitting percentage (.341 to .000), kills (36-22), aces (7-2), blocks (7-3), assists (34-21) and digs (46-33).
The Cavaliers continue their road trip on Tuesday with another AAC contest as they visit the Brenau University Golden Tigers. First serve is set for 6:30 p.m. in Gainesville, Ga.
