LAURINBURG, N.C.— The Montreat women's wrestling team traveled to Laurinburg, N.C. Friday afternoon for a pair of duals, including one against a fellow Mid-South Conference (MSC) foe. Wrestling with just four athletes, the Cavaliers put up a tough fight before ultimately falling to St. Andrews University, 20-10, and Allen University, 21-19. With the close defeats, Montreat's record slid to 2-6 (0-1 MSC) this season.
Shorthanded in both matchups, each contested bout proved to be impactful during the Cavs' time at St. Andrews. In the opening battle, both teams forfeited at 101 and 116, while SAU and
Trinity Howard claimed forfeit victories at 109 and 123, respectively.
With the score level at 5-5, the Knights captured back-to-back critical wins in the 130-lb and 136-lb weight classes. A pin at 130 set the home side up for success, and a tech fall at 136 essentially clinched the win for St. Andrews.
Marissa Delacruz picked up a point in her defeat, and
Nicole Lewis tacked on four more points in her tech fall triumph at 155; however, the gap was too much to overcome. An additional forfeit at 170 applied the finishing touches on SAU's 20-10 MSC victory.
Once again, forfeits accounted for most of the scoring in the Cavaliers' clash with Allen. The Yellow Jackets picked up four free wins, while
Charlotte Wheeler, Delacruz and Lewis did the same. Ultimately, the latter dual came down to Howard's showdown at 123. While Howard did well in collecting a tech fall victory, only a pin could help the Cavs erase their deficit. Montreat came up just short as a result, and Allen seized a 21-19 triumph.
The Montreat women's wrestling team continues dual action next Friday at the Warrior Duals, hosted by Indiana Institute of Technology, in Fort Wayne, Ind. Bouts are slated to begin at 1 p.m.
