TOCCOA FALLS, Ga.— Facing off against the Toccoa Falls College Screaming Eagles in Georgia Saturday afternoon, the Montreat men's soccer team had no trouble claiming its second triumph of the season. The Cavaliers put the ball in the net early and often, securing a 6-0 win to improve to 2-3-1 on the year.
Immediate pressure from the Cavs resulted in a quartet of corner kicks in quick succession and, following a fifth set piece,
Marcos Santiago got Montreat on the board. Santiago swiftly doubled the visitors' advantage before
Ale Hernandez converted on a penalty to make the score 3-0 only a few minutes into the contest.
Midway through the frame,
Alex Klymenko netted a goal prior to Hernandez securing his first-half brace as the Cavaliers led 5-0 at the intermission.
Toccoa Falls (1-6) got a couple of shots off but failed to trouble
Marius Braedstrup-Holm at all as the Screaming Eagles routinely turned possession over to Montreat. Likewise, in the second half,
Frankie Zavala, who came on in goal for the latter period, had a sole scare that TFC squandered.
Although the Cavaliers controlled the entirety of play in the second frame, the visitors struck only once due to a plethora of offsides and a few missed chances. The Cavs sealed their 6-goal triumph as
Ethan Kerns blasted the ball into the back of the net early in the half to cap off the emphatic win over the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) member Screaming Eagles.
"Our team played great today. We showed heart and intensity from the start and put in a very good performance," said head coach
Michael Bruce. He concluded, "We played some quality soccer but also showed togetherness and team spirit. We are excited about getting back into conference play on Wednesday."
Men's soccer returns to Appalachian Athletic Conference play on Wednesday when the team travels to Bluefield University for a matchup with the Rams. Kickoff in Bluefield, W.Va. is expected at 7 p.m.
