BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C.— After inclement weather suspended Saturday's Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) contest between the Montreat women's soccer team and the Tennessee Wesleyan University Bulldogs, the two sides resumed play Wednesday afternoon at Pulliam Stadium in Black Mountain, N.C. Leading 1-0 when the second half restarted, TWU added another tally in the final 45 minutes to defeat the hosts, 2-0, and drop the Cavaliers to 0-3-0 (0-1-0 AAC) on the season.
Tennessee Wesleyan (2-0-1, 1-0-0 AAC) set the tone early on Saturday when it had a decent look at goal just 21 seconds into the initial half of action. Later, in the 10
th minute, the Bulldogs nearly broke the scoreless deadlock with a pair of shots just four second apart; however,
Logan White made a crucial first save, and
Ellie Porter notched a defensive save as the last player standing to keep TWU off the scoreboard.
While the visitors couldn't break through immediately, the Bulldogs did register the match's opening tally. Just into the 36
th minute, TWU recorded three shots in a 6-second span. White made close-range saves on the initial two attempts, but a header on the third try looped over everyone and crossed the goal line to put Tennessee Wesleyan ahead at the half, 1-0.
Montreat took all three corner kicks through 45 minutes of play and placed two of its six shots on goal. Meanwhile, TWU directed seven of its 11 shots on frame prior to the intermission.
Just before the second half began, lightning struck within an 8-mile radius of Pulliam Stadium. Following a 2-hour weather delay, the match was officially suspended until Monday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.
When play resumed, the Bulldogs picked up right where they left off, nearly scoring twice with a pair of shots sent just above the crossbar in the first 10 minutes of the second half.
Surviving Tennessee Wesleyan's initial two dangerous chances, the Cavs almost equalized in the 63
rd minute.
JJ Aalbue whipped a free kick into the penalty area, and
Sam Aalbue perfectly placed a header into the right side of the net; however, the referee immediately raised his flag for an offside infraction, blowing the play dead and canceling out the Cavalier goal.
Five minutes later, the Bulldogs closed out the scoring with their second tally. With a few passes up the left flank and a cross toward the far post, Tennessee Wesleyan managed to double its lead in the 69
th minute and ultimately secure a 2-0 conference triumph on the road.
TWU ended the competition with advantages in shots (17-10) and shots on goal (9-5), but the Bulldogs were whistled offside on nine occasions compared to the hosts' three instances. Montreat held a slim 3-2 edge in corner kicks taken, and
Logan White finished the match with a game-high six saves.
The Montreat women's soccer team doesn't have to wait long to play its next home match as the Cavaliers are back in action Wednesday afternoon. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. in Black Mountain, N.C.
