PINEVILLE, N.C.— The Montreat men's soccer team started its 2023 campaign with a road matchup against the Johnson & Wales University Charlotte Wildcats Wednesday evening. After 90 minutes of action on a rainy night, the Cavaliers tied the home side 0-0, beginning the year with a 0-0-1 record.
JWU (0-0-1) controlled chances in the opening period, blasting eight shots toward the Cavs' goal to Montreat's mere one shot attempt. The Wildcats also held a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks, but
Marius Braedstrup-Holm stopped both of the attempts on target from the home team in the first 45 minutes.
In the second half, the Cavaliers swung momentum in their favor, outshooting Johnson & Wales 8-4 while placing three shots on frame. Despite the charge from the visitors, neither side could break through as the match concluded scoreless. Braedstrup-Holm ended with three saves and
Rodrigo Jimenez attempted a team-high three shots. Overall, the hosts outshot Montreat 12-9 and earned four corners to the Cavs' one.
"We were not able to show our best tonight but to start the season with a shutout gives us a base to build on for the coming games," head coach
Michael Bruce noted. "We need to improve moving forward and we will work hard to be better on Saturday."
Men's soccer now travels to Central, S.C. for a battle with Southern Wesleyan University on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
