BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C.— The Montreat men's lacrosse team honored its seniors prior to Saturday's Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) matchup against the Point University Skyhawks at Pulliam Stadium. Despite a late comeback attempt, the Cavaliers fell by a 15-13 score and moved to 1-9 (1-5 AAC) on the season.
Point (3-11, 1-6 AAC) started the contest on the front foot, scoring the initial three goals of the game to lead 3-0 through 12 minutes.
Brayden Hittle got the Cavs on the board with 2:29 left in the opening frame; however, another Skyhawk tally made it 4-1 in favor of the visitors after one quarter of action.
PU began the scoring in the second period before
Johnny Miles scored three of the ensuing four goals as he registered a hat trick over 6:24 of gameplay to trim Montreat's deficit to just two (6-4) with 5:11 left until halftime.
The teams traded scores to end the first half as the Cavs went into the intermission down 7-5.
The visitors made a charge in the third frame, recording five of the six goals in the 15-minute span to double up Montreat 12-6 with one quarter remaining. After the Skyhawks built their advantage to its largest of the day five minutes into the final period, senior
Jonathan Gunn scored his second goal of the year to bring the team within six again (13-7).
Point registered two tallies the rest of the matchup, while the Cavaliers ended the competition by scoring six of the last seven goals.
Grayson Scott notched four goals over the span, and Hittle and Gunn each contributed with a goal as the Cavs cut their deficit to a pair (15-13) with 11 seconds on the clock. Despite the late charge due to four goals in a span of 1:22 following a change in goal for the Skyhawks, Montreat dropped the game by two, handing Point its first AAC win of the season.
In the end, Scott led all Cavaliers with four goals, while Miles added a hat trick. Hittle and Gunn each scored twice and Hittle captained the team with a trio of assists. Senior
Ben Stephenson collected three points thanks to his goal and two assists.
PU led most statistical categories, although the Cavs made a late comeback attempt. The Skyhawks edged Montreat in total shots (50-49), shots on goal (30-23) and faceoff wins (21-8). The Cavaliers did notch more saves (15-10), clears (21-14), opposing turnovers (30-25) and caused turnovers (14-11) in the defeat.
Men's lacrosse now turns its attention to a matchup with Tennessee Wesleyan University at Pulliam Stadium on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
