Softball Drops Two to Kentucky Christian

GRAYSON, Ky.— The Montreat softball team remained in Kentucky for two contests against the Kentucky Christian University Knights Monday afternoon. Following 9-3 and 2-1 defeats, the Cavaliers dropped to 5-12 overall and 1-5 in Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) action.

The first two Cavs reached base in game one and a sacrifice line out by Leyna Gould scored Cameryn Bass to open the scoring. Despite the early lead for the visitors, KCU tallied a 6-spot due to five hits and two errors in the second frame to lead by five (6-1).

Bass stole home after a leadoff double in the third and an error brought a Cavalier around in the fourth; however, runs by the Knights in four straight innings contributed to a 9-3 result in favor of the home team.

Bass (2-3) recorded a multi-hit effort and scored two of Montreat's three runs in the initial matchup.

Game two featured much less offense as the teams combined for seven hits. Deanna Waddell pitched well in the circle for the Cavs as she held KCU to just four hits over six innings of work, allowing only two runs, one earned, and striking out five in the process.

Although the pitching was better for Montreat, the Cavaliers tallied a mere three hits, notching their first baserunner in the fourth frame. Kentucky Christian scored one in the bottom of the fourth, and, though Bella Colbert drove in Cierra Lail with a double in the fifth, the home team responded to lead 2-1 in the sixth to take the contest by the slimmest of margins.

Softball returns to play on Wednesday at Truett McConnell University for a doubleheader. First pitch in Cleveland, Ga. is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
