Softball Wins Sunday Doubleheader versus Bluefield for First Sweep of 2023

MARION, N.C.— The Montreat softball team hosted a doubleheader at Big League Camp on Sunday as the Cavaliers battled the Bluefield University Rams in an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) doubleheader. With a 1-0 win in the first matchup and a 6-1 victory in game two, the Cavaliers improved to 9-28 (5-13 AAC) and completed their second sweep in as many years.

Game one featured a pitchers' duel as both starters threw complete games and surrendered just four hits each. Kyann Lyne retired her first five batters and allowed only two hits through her first five innings of work to keep the Rams off the board.

In the bottom of the second, Katie Johnson singled and was promptly scored by Kyle Granger's RBI triple to plate the lone run of the initial contest. Lyne secured her second win of the season on 83 pitches thanks to 14 fly outs and seven ground outs in the circle. Cameryn Bass (2-2) tallied two of the team's four hits in the competition.

Bluefield (3-15, 1-9 AAC) scored in the top of the first in the latter competition; however, the Cavs responded. After tying the contest in the second thanks to an RBI single from Keelie Mauk, Montreat plated two in the third, one in the fourth and another two in the fifth to lead 6-1.

Coleena Selleck knocked in Bass before a sacrifice fly off the bat of Katie Johnson made it 3-1 in the third. Then, Selleck brought Bass in for a second time as the Cavaliers led by three through four. Taylor Yonke made it four consecutive innings in which Montreat scored as she drove in a pair of baserunners in the fifth.

Deanna Waddell gave up just the lone run and five hits over her seven innings of work. She completed her effort on 79 pitches with a pair of strikeouts, recording her team-best fifth win of the year. With the pitching performances, the Cavaliers have now allowed one run or fewer in their last four contests.

The Cavs outhit their opposition 10-5 as Yonke (2-4), Bass (2-4), Selleck (2-3) and Granger (2-4) all registered multiple hits in the latter matchup.

Softball now takes on Johnson University-Tennessee in a home doubleheader on Tuesday. First pitch of game one is set for 4:00 p.m.
