COLUMBIA, S.C.— The Montreat softball team played its first two Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) contests of the year Wednesday afternoon on the road against the Columbia International University Rams. Though the Cavaliers plated a few runs, the home side took the matchups via 7-3 and 9-2 scores as Montreat fell to 4-9 (0-2 AAC) on the season.
CIU (8-8, 3-1 AAC) got on the board first in game one, registering runs in the first and third frames before the Cavs could answer. Back-to-back hits by
Bella Colbert and
Samantha Browning scored the initial run of the ballgame for Montreat in the top of the fourth, cutting the deficit in half midway through the game.
Despite the tally, the Rams responded with five in the bottom of the fifth, coming within a run of enforcing the mercy rule but leaving the winning runner stranded on third with the bases loaded. With new life, the Cavaliers took advantage of a dropped ball in right field that plated a pair of runs in the seventh; however, the visitors recorded just three hits and fell by four. Browning (2-2) notched two of the team's three base knocks.
In game two, Columbia International grabbed the lead with a run in the second prior to putting up five in the fourth to lead 6-0 heading into the fifth inning. Montreat produced two runs in the top of the fifth thanks to a 2-out error and pair of hits, including a 2-RBI double by
Katie Johnson that trimmed the gap to four runs (6-2) entering the bottom of the frame.
Ultimately, the Rams got the two runs back in the lower half of the inning and added another in the sixth to prevail by seven and sweep the Cavaliers. The Cavs had four players go 2-for-4 at the plate as
Cameryn Bass,
Leyna Gould,
Sarah Edge and Johnson all recorded multiple hits in the second contest; however, a plethora of miscues and 12 runners left on base kept Montreat from earning a split of the doubleheader.
Softball continues its season when the Cavs take the field at Kentucky Christian on Saturday. First pitch of game one in Grayson, Ky. is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
