ALBANY, Ga.— After splitting the doubleheader versus Albany State University on Saturday, the Montreat softball team repeated its performance Sunday afternoon by winning game one 3-1 before dropping the final competition 7-4. With the split, the Cavs are 2-2 on the year.
The Rams struck first in the opening inning of the initial game thanks to an error and a sacrifice fly, but the Cavaliers answered in the third. Following two walks,
Coleena Selleck brought
Sarah Edge and
Keelie Mauk around with her single to center to give the visitors a 2-1 edge. After a scoreless frame, Selleck delivered with her second hit of the matchup, driving in
Cameryn Bass with a double to center.
Selleck ended the game 2-for-4 with all three RBIs for Montreat, while Bass (2-4) and
Samantha Browning (2-3) registered the team's other four hits. Though the Cavs were outhit 11-6 in the competition,
Deanna Waddell kept Albany State off the board in key situations, pitching a complete game and notching her first win of the season by getting out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the seventh.
In game two, the Rams immediately scored once more, recording two runs in the bottom of the first. The Cavs responded with an RBI single from
Alyssa Hudson in the third; however, ASU plated three in the bottom half of the frame and added two in the fourth to lead 7-1.
A pair of hits and an error brought two Montreat runs across in the fifth and Bass stole home in the seventh, but it wasn't enough to pull the Cavaliers level as the team fell by three. Bass tallied a 3-for-4 performance with a run scored to end as the only Cav with multiple hits in the latter game.
Softball continues its season-opening road trip with a pair of contests against Fort Valley State University Monday afternoon. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
