MONTREAT, N.C.— The Montreat men's soccer team put up a plethora of goals in its victories during the 2023 season, outscoring opposition 34-4 over six games as the Cavaliers concluded the year with a 6-10-2 overall record and a 5-7-1 record in Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) play.
After beginning the season with a 0-0 draw and trio of defeats through four games, the Cavs began to hit their stride midway into the month of September. A 4-match win streak helped Montreat jump back above .500 as the squad registered a 9-2 home triumph over Kentucky Christian before shutting out Toccoa Falls (6-0), Bluefield (6-0) and Pikeville (2-0) on the road.
The Cavaliers then dropped a series of three contests, two to teams mentioned in the NAIA Men's Soccer Coaches' Top 25 Poll; however, Montreat rebounded at McAlister Gymnasium once again. Picking up an 8-2 victory against Johnson (Tenn.), the Cavs vaulted themselves to their fifth clean sheet of 2023 with a 3-0 defeat of Columbia (S.C.).
Though Montreat fell in four consecutive competitions following the shutout win over the Koalas, Montreat concluded its regular season with a 2-2 result at Bryan on Oct. 28.
Thanks to a team-high 11 goals and seven assists,
Zeljko Stanojevic claimed a spot on the All-AAC Second Team. Ten Cavaliers were named to the AAC All-Academic Team, while three grabbed CSC Academic All-District recognition. Six notched Daktronics NAIA Scholar-Athlete status.
