DAYTON, Tenn.— The Montreat men's soccer team wrapped up its 2023 season with a conference match against Bryan College, and the game ended in a draw with a final score of 2-2. After a hard-fought contest, Montreat finished the season with a 6-10-2 overall record and 5-7-1 record in Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) play.
Right from the opening whistle, both teams applied relentless pressure to keep the ball away from the net, but just five minutes into the game a brilliant strike from the freshman sensation,
Zeljko Stanojevic, marked his second goal of the season and catapulted the Cavs into a 1-0 lead. As the match rolled on, the Cavaliers dominated the shot count, leading 6-2, and even secured the first corner of the half.
It didn't take long for Stanojevic to strike again. Just seven minutes after his first goal, Stanojevic seized another opportunity, catching the Lions' goalkeeper off-guard and making it 2-0 in favor of the Cavs. Following a spectacular first half, the Cavaliers headed into the break with a commanding lead.
After halftime, the Cavs continued to exhibit their competitive spirit in the season's finale. However, in the 47th minute, the Lions executed a successful attempt, bringing the score to 2-1. The game remained intense as Bryan College kept pushing with shot attempts standing at 13-4 in favor of the Lions in the second half, including seven shots on target. In a nail-biting turn of events, as the final minutes ticked away, Bryan managed to equalize just when it seemed the Cavs were about to secure their victory.
Thanks to the second-half push, Bryan notched more shots (15-10) and shots on goal (9-6). Both squads earned three corner kicks. In addition to Stanojevic's two goals,
Miodrag Bankovic contributed a pair of assists, and
August Ahl tacked on an assist of his own.
Montreat finished the season with a 6-10-2 record after the Cavs failed to place in the top eight of the AAC standings.
