Women’s Soccer Outclassed by No. 20 Truett McConnell in Georgia

CLEVELAND, Ga.— The Montreat women's soccer team went on the road to Georgia to battle one of the top teams in the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Saturday afternoon. Facing the No. 20-ranked Truett McConnell University Bears, the Cavaliers recorded two shots and fell by a score of 5-0. Montreat is now 9-5 (8-4 AAC) on the year.

Both teams felt the game out for the first half of the initial period. Truett McConnell dominated possession; however, the Bears notched just a pair of shots off target over the opening 25 minutes of the contest.

After Montreat earned a corner kick and got its only shot attempt of the first half in the 29th minute, TMU got on the board just four minutes later. A failed clearance landed at the feet of a Truett McConnell attacker, who blasted the ball into the net for a 1-0 lead with 12:50 left until halftime.

The rest of the frame featured a couple of attempts off goal from the home side, but nothing to trouble backup goalkeeper Alex Chapman, who got her first career start in place of Logan White. At the break, the Bears held an edge in shots (7-1) and shots on goal (1-0), while each team earned one corner kick through 45 minutes of action.

TMU (13-2-2, 12-0-1 AAC) put immediate pressure on the Cavaliers in the second half, taking a corner kick and forcing a save out of Chapman within three minutes of the period's start. In the 51st minute, a blunder then awarded the Bears their second tally before Truett McConnell netted its third goal only 90 seconds later.

Montreat struggled to do much against the nationally-acclaimed Bears as the home team easily extended its overall unbeaten streak to 15 games and its unbeaten streak over the Cavs to 13 contests. TMU added another goal in the 61st minute and scored in the final minute of the competition to complete its 5-goal triumph.

"Our players worked hard. Truett is a quality opponent, and they consistently show that they are a top-25 team in the country," added head coach Kristin Eggert.

Sydney Jordan and JJ Aalbue registered the two Cavalier shot attempts as the visitors were outshot 18-2, 9-0 on goal. The Bears also doubled up the Cavs in corner kicks (4-2). Without surrendering a shot on goal, Truett McConnell extended its shutout streak to more than eight matches (740:44). Chapman and Anna Weissenfluh, who relieved the former with 20 minutes remaining in the game, each made two saves.

Women's soccer now hosts St. Andrews University for its final home match of the regular season on Wednesday. Kickoff between the Cavs and the Knights at Pulliam Stadium is slated for 7:15 p.m.
