BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C.— Playing host to the Milligan University Buffaloes for Senior Night Saturday evening, the Montreat women's soccer team utilized a first-half goal and several clutch saves in net to secure a 1-0 victory over its opposition. With the 1-goal Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) triumph, the Cavaliers moved to 8-4-0 (8-2-0 AAC) on the year.
The Buffaloes (7-6-1, 6-4-0 AAC) controlled play early in the contest, recording four of the first five shots of the game. Though MU tested
Logan White with a trio of shots on frame over a span of 5:14, White stopped each of them to keep the matchup scoreless through 12 minutes.
Montreat then began putting balls in dangerous locations, earning four corner kicks midway into the half that built momentum for the home side. Following another save from White and a couple of shots off net from the Cavs,
JJ Aalbue bagged her 10
th goal of the season to give the Cavaliers a 1-0 lead. In the 33
rd minute,
Charlotte Craver played a ball to the top of the box, where
Jamie White settled the pass and laid off a ball that Aalbue rocketed into the bottom left corner of the goal.
The remainder of the first half saw Milligan's only corner of the period in addition to a plethora of fouls on the Cavs; however, neither team changed the 1-0 scoreline. At the half, Milligan had attempted more shots overall (9-6) and had doubled up the Cavaliers in shots on target (4-2). Montreat held a distinct advantage in corner kicks, taking four of the five in the opening 45 minutes.
Logan White ended the initial period with four saves.
A strange second frame unfolded as Montreat attempted to hold on to its lead. Back-to-back corner kicks came up empty for the Cavs and a pair of shots missed the target before a 15-minute-long delay caused by the lights going out paused action.
Following the delay, the Cavaliers put pressure on, but it was Milligan who had the most prominent opportunities. On two separate occasions, a Buffalo was clear in on goal.
Logan White stood tall making the stop on one attempt while MU hit the post on the other.
As the Cavaliers looked to seal the result in their favor, the home team dribbled the ball to the corner, hemming the visitors in their own half for the final five minutes of the competition. Montreat tried more shots (15-13) and tallied a significant number of corners (9-3), while the Buffaloes put seven shots on target to the Cavs' mere three.
Logan White ended the match with seven saves as the Cavaliers recorded their third straight shutout win. The triumph also marks the fifth consecutive win over Milligan, the fourth in a row by a single goal.
"That was an exciting finish. Logan [White] came up big in goal tonight. We are so proud of our seniors and what they have helped build here," noted head coach
Kristin Eggert.
