MARIETTA, Ga.— The Montreat women's wrestling team made its 2023 debut Wednesday night with a road Mid-South Conference (MSC) tilt against the No. 3-ranked Life University Running Eagles. After falling by a 43-3 scoreline in Marietta, Ga., the Cavaliers saw their record move to 3-13 (0-1 MSC) this season.
Life (12-1, 3-0 MSC) jumped out to a 14-0 lead over Montreat thanks to early victories in three different fashions. Following a 10-0 tech fall at 101, the Running Eagles registered a pin (1:55) at 109 and a forfeit at 116 to build an instant edge.
Trinity Howard tallied Montreat's only team points of the night thanks to her impressive come-from-behind victory. Wrestling at 123, the Queen Creek, Ariz. native managed to dig herself out of a 4-0 hole. Howard rattled off eight consecutive points, as well as 12 of the next 15 points, to get the Cavs on the board with a 12-7 win.
Despite Howard's triumph at 123, the Running Eagles stayed on course and claimed six consecutive wins to close out the dual. Two pins, two 10-0 tech falls and two forfeits aided Life as it concluded the evening with a 43-3 victory over the Cavaliers, their fourth 40-plus point victory of the season.
The Montreat women's wrestling team takes on a pair of top-10 Mid-South Conference foes in Indiana Tech and the University of the Cumberlands on Jan. 20. Matches are scheduled to begin around 6:00 p.m. in Williamsburg, Ky.
