LAURINBURG, N.C.— In an Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) matchup Tuesday afternoon at St. Andrews University, the Montreat men's soccer team fell victim to a trio of first-half tallies by its opposition, dropping the match by a 3-0 scoreline to move to 2-3 on the season and 1-1 in its 2022 AAC campaign.
St. Andrews (4-1, 2-0 AAC) controlled the contest from the outset, getting on the board only 4:05 into the game. The home team then doubled its advantage 160 seconds later before adding a third to lead 3-0 in the 25
th minute.
Hugo Rodriguez notched the Cavaliers' first shot attempt with a high effort only moments after the SAU edge reached three, while
Marius Braedstrup-Holm collected his first stop in net midway through the initial period.
Raphael Akendo threatened with a shot on goal and Braesdtrup-Holm made another save; however, the Cavs trailed 3-0 through 45 minutes.
SAU registered 12 shots, five on target, compared to Montreat's three attempts over the opening period. Each team tallied one corner heading into the second half.
The Knights continued pressing in the second period, hemming the Cavaliers in their defensive half and creating additional scoring opportunities. Braedstrup-Holm was equal to the task on both of the home team's shots on frame, including a penalty kick in the 85
th minute.
Despite shoring up on the defensive side of the ball and taking seven corners to the opposition's two, Montreat could not capitalize offensively, leading to a 3-0 triumph for SAU. Overall, St. Andrews outshot the Cavs 20-7, while recording seven attempts on frame to Akendo's lone chance on target for the visitors. Braedstrup-Holm ended the day with four saves.
Men's soccer returns home for a conference contest against Bryan College on Saturday. Kickoff at Pulliam Stadium is currently slated for 7:15 p.m.
