ROANOKE, Va.— The Montreat women's lacrosse team played one of the most complete games in program history on Friday afternoon, defeating Hollins University in a non-conference matchup in Roanoke, Va., 24-1. With the 23-goal victory margin, the largest ever by a Montreat women's lacrosse team, the Cavaliers improved to 11-7 overall on the year.
Montreat tallied the game's first six goals, needing just 68 seconds to get the scoring started.
Mina Hicks recorded the first score for the Cavaliers, and
Aleea Bone made it 2-0 in favor of Montreat just 19 seconds later.
Kate Gauntlett and
Hannah Jarboe followed up a pair of
Dovie Yates strikes to put the Cavs well ahead of Hollins just 5:12 into the contest, 6-0.
Hollins (0-7) scored its first and only goal of the day at the 5:19 mark of the opening quarter, momentarily stopping the Montreat run to make it 6-1. From there, only Cavaliers found their way onto the scoresheet.
The Cavs scored 18 unanswered goals to conclude the contest, including five more in the first to end the frame with an 11-1 lead. Bone and Gauntlett registered their second goals of the first quarter, while Yates recorded a hat trick when she put the Cavs up by eight.
Kristen Wilson and
Mina Hicks both scored in the final minute of the initial frame to build Montreat's 10-goal edge.
While the scoring pace slowed in the second quarter onward, Montreat still remained firmly in control. Gauntlett and Jarboe each scored twice in the second, while Bone utilized a free-position tally to help the Cavaliers build a 16-1 lead entering halftime.
Montreat tallied four additional goals in both the third and fourth quarters. Bone and Gauntlett were responsible for four of those tallies, while
Izzy Knight,
Sydney Chivers and
Jailyn Munoz all rifled shots into the net for their lone goals on the day.
Ultimately, the goal-scoring outburst aided the Cavaliers along their journey to a 24-1 win. The 23-goal margin is the largest margin of victory in program history, surpassing a 22-goal victory margin against Brenau University earlier this season.
Bone led all scorers with six goals on the afternoon, while Gauntlett (5), Yates (4) and Jarboe (3) all registered at least a hat trick. Gauntlett continues to lead the NAIA with 107 goals scored on the year. In the end, nine different Cavaliers scored in the win. Defensively,
Carlie Henning stopped three of the four shots on frame that she faced across 45 minutes in net.
Montreat held considerable advantages in nearly every statistical category Friday afternoon, most notably with shots (35-10), shots on goal (29-4), draw controls (16-11) and ground balls (15-11).
The Montreat women's lacrosse team closes out its 2022 regular season on Sunday with a non-conference game at Sweet Briar College. Opening draw is set for 12:00 p.m. in Sweet Briar, Va.
